Counting the Dead is the story of the ongoing struggle to protect the wilds of northeastern Mozambique. It recounts the devastating effects of elephant poaching and illegal logging on the Quirimbas National Park. Still emerging from a 25-year civil war, Mozambique is a country only now beginning to secure its natural heritage. But bit-by-bit, the nation’s elephant population is being whittled away. Indeed, the nation is losing the battle against the illegal wildlife trade almost even before it has begun to fight.
Specifically, Counting the Dead is an iBook that uses images, videos, and various interactive elements to tell the story of elephant poaching in Mozambique. The book should be viewed as a new type of journalistic product: part photo essay, part documentary, part guide, and part long-form story. You can learn more about the iBook on iTunes. The project was funded by Kickstarter.
